Pilar and JPilar and Juan are a happy married couple with very few resources. One day they decide to play the Christmas Lottery. But Pilar purchases tickets behind her husband's back for a raffle of a lamb, which eventually she ends up winning. Their children are delighted with the new animal, although Juan, disappointed, complains about money.Then they decide to serve the lamb for Christmas dinner, which seems impossible because the children are fond of the animal and no one is able to kill him. The same Christmas Eve someone steals the lamb and, distressed at the loss of the animal (who they already loved as a member of the family) begin to look desperately to get their new pet, living an incredible odyssey in the meantime.
In a small Spanish town, a group of old ladies decides to celebrate Christmas Eve with a "seat a poor man at your table" dinner: each wealthy household of the town will have a homeless person dining with them that night. The celebrations also include a parade, and in its midst is Plácido, the humble owner of a three-wheeler, whose family is forced to live in a public lavatory because they lack the money to pay rent, and who must pay the second bill on his vehicle before midnight or else he will lose it.
A happily married woman is distinguished by her ability to lie constantly. Her husband reproaches her that she is unoccupied, and that is where her liking for lies comes from. One night, the maid opens the door to her boyfriend who, together with a partner, intends to raid the house.
Nazario is an old homeless man who sings and plays the guitar through the streets and the Madrid subway, for his livelihood and that of Sergio, an eight-year-old orphan boy, whom he took in for charity and whom he loves very much. One day a wealthy couple comes across them, takes a fancy to the child and asks Nazario if there is a chance to adopt him. After much thought, Nazario sacrifices himself and agrees to the family's request. The boy does not have the economic hardships he had before, but he is not happy in his new home since he misses the freedom of the street and Nazario's affection. One day a gang of criminals kidnaps Sergio to demand a ransom for his release. Nazario found out about this, although he was initially suspected, he bravely intervenes in the rescue of him, being seriously injured. After his release, Sergio's adoptive family offers Nazario a job as a butler so that he can live comfortably and be in contact with the child.
One evening, two fairies - Worry and Fortune with their young assistant Mina - are walking through old Prague. As it is Fortune's birthday, she decides to give people a gift - she enchants quite ordinary slippers to fulfill the wearer's every wish. The slippers then change hands that evening and everything they have ever dreamed of suddenly becomes a reality. But what people wish for is often very tricky, and it may not always bring one the desired happiness. Rather, it happens to be misery. Even Fortune becomes convinced of this when she realizes that happiness is something everyone must earn for themselves.
