C.J. takes a close interest in Becker's case involving a custody suit of her former lover, Maggie Barnes, whose past lesbian love affair with C.J. has threatened to take Maggie's children away and put them in the care of her ex-husband. Billy Castroverti is fired for his unsatisfying work performance. Low staff morale makes it difficult for Brackman to organize the annual Christmas party, so Benny and Castroverti take over the chores and intend to go all out. Meanwhile, Kelsey fumes as Markowitz is forced to go out of town to miss their son's 2nd birthday party. Zoey and Rollins quarrel over their plans for the holidays. A holiday card from the late Rosalind Shays brings a form of relief for both McKenzie and Grace. Also, a mentally unbalanced temp office worker, named Betty, drives everyone to distraction.

Melina Paros receives an anonymous helping hand which is a videotape in her child-abuse case for the Attorney-General's office. Meanwhile, Markowitz finds some understanding during his stay in the psycho ward at the hospital and learns that his mental problems are purely physical in nature. Roxanne surprises a moody Mullaney with the news that she is pregnant. The dog Lincoln finally finds the missing pocket watch with a chain and give it to Brackman. Becker is kidnapped at knife point during his search to find Eric Schuller for Mr. Flicker. Also, Gwen finds out that Morales was not responsible for the nasty gifts and clears the air with him, but the unseen stalker continues to watch Gwen.

Murray suddenly dies from a stroke before the Christmas holiday, devastating everyone including Benny and Roxanne. Meanwhile, a smitten McKenzie willingly volunteers himself and a reluctant Grace to defend Rosalind against savings & loan charges, despite everyone's protest. Victor is representing a hospital chief of staff being sued by Paul Kohler, a bitter doctor who claims he was fired because of his physical disfigurement. Brackman and Rollins try to use hypnosis to control Noah Cowen, the businessman with Tourette's Syndrome, in preparation for a financial deal meeting. C.J. arranges the office Christmas party with Grace as Santa, and Kelsey tells Markowitz that she is thinking of a divorce.

The entire Bartlet family tries to gather for an early Christmas dinner at the White House, but inevitable delays occur as the president must deal with an overseas crisis. Ellie is held up at her lab, and five-year-old grandson Gus is having tantrums. In addition, Doug Westin (Jed and Abby's son-in-law) approaches Josh about running for an open congressional seat in his home district. Josh, Leo and the New Hampshire Democratic Party have already chosen a viable local candidate, but Doug persists. Jed, who likes and respects Doug, still thinks it's should be Liz who should run for the open seat.

Meanwhile, Brackman handles a small poetry society suing over the use of their mailing list by a much larger direct-mail organization. Mullaney is surprised when Roxanne and Dave Meyer walk into his office and ask him to give up any custody rights to their baby daughter. Denise takes offense at Halliday's questions about her religious convictions, and McKenzie plays Santa at the annual office Christmas party.

Josh finalizes a $6B health care plan that has strong support from both parties in both houses and appears to be a slam dunk for passage, but 78-year-old Senator Howard Stackhouse pulls a last-minute surprise--he wants money added for autism research or he'll filibuster. Thinking it's just a bluff, Josh blows off the senator, who then filibusters for more than eight hours while the WW staff waits desperately to begin their weekend with the episode unfolding as staffers write e-mails to their family members describing the evening's action. Elsewhere, Sam tries to eliminate various costly government documents, for which he's taken to task by a very young intern.

In an episode dotted with flashbacks, Leo and his attorney Jordon Kendall (Joanna Gleason) face a Congressional inquiry into whether the president lied to the American people regarding his MS, but this particular day of hearings concerns itself more with Abby and her secretly medicating Jed, and later with Leo's having fallen off the wagon during the campaign (a politically motivated Republican rep on the committee witnessed Leo drunk in his room three days before the nomination); we see the meeting in which Leo talked N.H. Governor Bartlet into running for president, introducing his idea, "Bartlet for America", on a cocktail napkin, which the president later frames and returns to Leo as a gift in thanks for all he's done for the president over the years; Cliff Calley, Donna's boyfriend and special counsel to the judicial oversight committee, asks the committee chair to halt the inquiry before the rep can compel Leo to admit his personal transgression; Leo asks Jordon to Xmas Eve dinne
