During the evening when St. Nicholas arrives to hand out gifts to good children, when human hearts and souls are yielding to the good deeds of the Christmas season, events in the lives of four people become interlinked. A 12-year-old boy spent months at a hospital, out of sight and mind of his uncaring mother. Finally it is a gesture of human love and sympathy that becomes the nicest gift - one that not even St. Nicholas can bring a child.
In 1942, Britain sends a group of British-trained Czech commandos to Prague to assassinate SS-General Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Nazi security services.
Charming 60-something José (Josef Abrhám) returns to Prague after 30 years living in Mexico, though he was convinced that he would never see his hometown again. He was persuaded by his deeply-religious Mexican wife Dolores (Dolores Heredia), who is convinced that only a miracle that might be fulfilled by Prague's famous Infant Jesus can help their daughter Penelopé (Aislinn Derbez) get pregnant, and the ideal time for this is Christmas. And when Ruda (Václav Postránecký), his friend from Prague, also insists, José agrees to return to the places he used to know and to the memories that they bring back--including his former Prague love Kveta (Libuse Safránková). It becomes evident that the Infant Jesus is not the only one capable of making miracles come true in Prague. Penelopé's longed-for conception is definitely not the only one.
Petronel, an angel, is still working at the Heaven's gates but is confident that he deserves a better function. His everlasting tempter Uriah, a devil, takes up tempting him. All one has to do to know all that God knows is pick an apple from the tree of knowledge. And then, the route to the well-deserved acknowledgment is free. Petronel and Uriah than proceed to argue about the apple, ant the results are catastrophic. The precious fruit falls all the way down to the Earth. The confused angel and his friend, the devil-tempter, have to quickly enter the human world, find the apple of Knowledge and bring it back. The night before Saint Nicolase's day they get tangled up in a peculiar whirl. They meet little Anezka and her beautiful mother, a crew of deceitful carolers, the greedy Kostál and a likable Sausage-seller. Before they manage to find the apple and bring it back where it belongs, they first have to endure a great adventure and get through quite a few dangerous setups.
